De Vette Mossel in Mpumalanga is all about relaxing with friends, excellent food and sipping on a good glass of South African wine; recreating the charm and allure of the fishing villages of the West Coast. This is true South African hospitality and cuisine, within gorgeous surrounds.

Nestled in the scenic town of Nelspruit, De Vette Mossel celebrates the wonderful variety and fresh flavours of seafood. However, there are no crystal wine glasses or silver pieces of cutlery. Rather, this is about authentic, rustic West Coast dining, complete with soft sea sand under your feet.

The menu consists of nine courses and 16 separate dishes. Diners can challenge themselves to eating as much as they can, but are guaranteed to leave here feeling well satisfied. The courses are served in succession, with each being even more scrumptious than the last. They are:

1. Mussels – the mussels are steamed with white wine in their half shell and served with onions, lots of garlic and farm butter
2. West Coast snoek with sweet potato – a true South African favourite
3. Seafood pot – this includes four types of fish, as well as calamari, mussels and prawn tails. It is served with rice, mixed salad or a creamy, cheesy vegetable dish
4. Meat potjie – a traditional local stew
5. Catch of the day, served with onions and olive oil or butter
6. Pan-friend calamari steak with onions and butter
7. West Coast rock lobster or prawns (this is an additional option and needs to be ordered separately)
8. A medley of melon and sweet melon, or tropical fruit
9. Coffee and koeksisters (a sticky South African pastry)

Pot bread is freshly baked throughout the meal and is served with farm butter and jam or preserve. This is the ultimate indulgence and is completely irresistible.

Most of these meals are prepared in full view of the diners, and on open fires to ensure that every dish is as fresh and tasty as possible. Guests are requested to bring their own drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), glasses and ice, as there are no bar facilities available here.

De Vette Mossel will open any day of the week for bookings of 20 people or more.
