In the eastern part of the balmy, scenic South African province of Mpumalanga is the idyllic Luphisi 4x4 Trail. It is situated just 40 kilometres from the city of Mbombela Nelspruit, and is the only 4x4 route in the immediate area.

This route winds through 50 kilometres of the countryside, and includes the rural areas and the rugged terrain for which this part of the country is so well-known and loved. It is required that all drivers be accompanied by a Luphisi guide for their safety and to ensure that they have the maximum amount of fun, getting the most out of their experience. It takes between six and eight hours to complete and has a formal grading of two to three.

The Luphisi Trail is a return route that includes exciting river crossings, as well as rocky and sandy terrain. It can be tackled at any time of year, making it fabulous for tourists and locals that want to see and feel the wonders of the African landscape. En route, drivers and their teams are encouraged to look out for some of the thrilling bird species, as well as the interesting game that can be viewed within their natural habitat. Visitors with a botanical inclination will be well rewarded by the many floral species here, including notable trees.

There are braai facilities available, and drivers should enjoy relaxing around the fire after their day’s adventures in the natural splendour of South Africa.

Conveniently, the Luphisi 4x4 Trail skirts the Kruger National Park, which continues to be one of the chief tourism attractions in the country and, indeed, the world. Here, an enormous array of plant and animal species can be enjoyed as they live, hunt and breed within the enormous confines of the park.
