There are few things that can beat exploring the Mpumalanga countryside with only the fresh air, sunshine, and birdsong as company. The only improvement on this scene is doing it on a mountain bike. White River is home to rolling hills, which make it ideal for mountain bikers that want a bit of a challenge with lashings of fun.

The White River Trails wind their ways through a massive area of some 6 000 hectares, showcasing its natural prettiness and inviting cyclists to test their skills. The presence of a very small number of manmade obstacles and plenty of natural obstacles makes these trails even more irresistible to keen mountain bikers.

The climbs average between five and 15 minutes and only make up about 2% of your riding distance. Single-track descents take between three and 13 minutes and will get the adrenalin pumping for those that want to tackle them at faster speeds. The base loops are 20 to 40 kilometres long, and most of the single tracks have an awesome 3-D feel. Negotiate your way through trees, under low-hanging branches, across watery patches, and through grasslands. Pass the dams and rivers for excellent views, and get ready for a few manmade challenges along the way.

Of course, the White River Trails are about more than the cycle. It is so beautiful here; cyclists are encouraged to take it all in. Climb out of the saddle, be still, and drink in the crisp air and the sound of the birds.

White River is a small farming town just outside Nelspruit. It is about 40 minutes away from the Kruger National Park’s gate, 25 minutes from Nelspruit, and 3.5 hours from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
