About MTB and Running Nature Trail

The South African experience is all about high blue skies, warm sunshine, fresh air, and plenty of exciting wildlife. And, there are few better ways to enjoy the utter beauty of this country than by exploring it on foot or in the saddle of a bicycle. The Grey Goose Game Lodge Nature Trails are the perfect places to get the most out of the pristine conditions of KwaZulu-Natal.

With the Drakensberg Mountains as your backdrop and the warm African sun on your shoulders, explore the two trails at the Gray Goose Game Lodge. Each trail is a circular loop that extends for five kilometres and can be walked, run or cycled at your own pace.

The first trail takes you on a leisurely walk down into the verdant valley and along the scenic banks of the river. The bird life here is abundant, and visitors should also look out for some fascinating bugs. Then, there is a short, steep climb that gets the heart pumping harder, just before arriving back at the luxury of the lodge.

For an added challenge, continue onto the second loop. This meanders through the dense forest, where the coolness of the forest floor and the sound of the birds under the canopy take you far away from the real world. Emerge from the woods onto a bright grassy plain, where zebra and blesbuck graze on golden grasses, and birds soar overhead. The single track through the countryside is challenging at times, but visitors are rewarded with a three-kilometre descent to the Iyakhala Dam, and then back to the lodge.

Reward your efforts with an ice-cold soda or beer at the Gooseberries Restaurant, while you laze in the shade of one of the trees.

These nature trails are open from Monday to Sunday; and are a fantastic way for a family to spend time together, push their limits, and stay healthy during their time in Newcastle.
