The pretty area of Tshwane incorporates the city of Pretoria and its surrounds, in the heart of the Gauteng Province. It is only a short drive from Johannesburg and its OR Tambo International Airport. And it is within this convenient spot that the scenic Luton Valley Bird Sanctuary is secluded.

This sanctuary offers fantastic birding for those that love to sit on the dam’s edge and watch as feathered jewels make their appearance. Other species are also abundant along the hiking and walking trails, so visitors should keep an eye out for these gorgeous birds. In addition, they make for excellent wildlife photographs, as do the little mammals (like mongooses) and reptiles that share this habitat.

The large dam is in the centre of the bird sanctuary and its serene waters invite tired travellers to rest on its banks and soak up the real, untainted splendour of Africa.

There is a well-maintained running or walking route. Along its 850 metres, really beautiful fauna and flora can be enjoyed as the warm South African sunshine bathes the countryside in a golden light. Guided walks are fantastic for visitors wanting to learn more about the area and the plants and animals to which it is home. Booking is essential for these guided walks.

Educational tours for children are another highlight, and well worth a visit. Prior booking is essential. Parking is available, and this sanctuary is open all year round.
