About Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve

The Baviaanskloof Wilderness is an incredibly scenic gorge that lies between two sets of mountain ranges - the Baviaanskloof and the Kouga mountains - in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Did you know? The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve includes the UNESCO World Heritage Baviaankloof Wilderness Area.

Baviaanskloof is an area of 'outstanding natural beauty' because of its incredible land forms, diverse display of South African plants, and animals. Whilst seven of the eight South African biomes are represented in the Baviaanskloof region, making it one of the most biodiverse areas in southern Africa.

Outdoor lovers head into the wilderness playgound in offroad vehicles for escapes from the pulse of city living. Within the scenic, craggy mountainous landscape they rock climb, mountaineer, camp, hike, bike, fish and watch the birds.

The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve goes one step further - to conserve an area that covers over 400 000 hectares, that includes protected areas and farmlands.

The idea behind the formation of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve is to expand the Baviaanskloof to create a huge reserve that brings into balance the conservation of this incredible biodiversity and natural resources on the one hand, and the needs of local, rural farming, and local and regional development, on the other.

The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve includes the UNESCO World Heritage Baviaankloof Wilderness Area. The philosophy behind this is to 'keep people on living landscapes.

The effort is to include private landowners, state protected areas and local communities in a biologically, economically and socially sustainable conservation area. The Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve lies at the convergence of three 'biodiversity hotspots' – the Cape Floristic Region, the Succulent Karoo, and the Maputaland-Pondoland- Albany hotspot.

Between 2004 and 2009 the Baviaanskloof Mega-reserve Project was funded by the World Bank. Since 2010 it has been run by Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency, which also manages projects like the Biodiversity and Citrus Initiative, community beekeeping, small business training and decision-maker wilderness trail projects.
