About Kamala Game Reserve

Kamala Game Reserve is a private reserve lying between Bruinjieshoogte and Boschberg mountain ranges that each rise to about 6 000 feet, close to Somerset East, about two hours drive from Port Elizabeth (181,4 km) on the N10 National Road.

Did you know? Kamala comes from the word Kamenyala – kameelperd or giraffe.

Through the reserve the Little Fish River winds for some 34 kilometres. See over 30 species of animal that include buffalo, elephants, lion, rhino, giraffe and a large variety of antelope – the Big 5 – in a malaria free environment.

Six different plant biomes are in evidence in the Kamala reserve because of the rich soils and topography of the land, giving rise to a wealth of plant and bird life within indigenous bush and forests. Over 270 bird species are found in the reserve.

Succulent Karoo, Thicket, Savannah, Nama-Karoo, Forest and Grassland biomes grace the reserve with incredible views.

There are a range of activities for visitors, other than game drives, that include horse trails and even zip slides over the gorge, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking and the 4X4 Samil mountain ascent.
