Baviaanskloof

About Baviaans Lodge 4x4 Trail

In the heart of the Kouga Mountain Range of the Eastern Cape Province, where the vegetation is scrubby and the mountain faces sometimes stark, lies the Baviaans Lodge 4x4 Trail. This trail shows off some of the most breath-taking scenery in the region, from the comfort and adventure of your 4x4 vehicle. Summer and winter temperatures are extreme.

The Baviaans Lodge 4x4 Trail is 33 kilometres long, and takes between four and five hours to complete. It has an official grading of two to three. The trail extends from the quiet beauty of the Langkloof, over the Kouga Mountains and to the Baviaans (or in the opposite direction). The views are spectacular, and the expanses vast. The terrain of this 4x4 route comprises gravel, loose rock, sturdy rock and old farm tracks that have been left to erode and age.

While this trail is not particularly adrenalin-inducing for those in the know, it certainly promises gorgeous vistas and a fair challenge. There are some great off-road sections, as well as bushy roads that have been left to become quite overgrown.

The Baviaanskloof is a World Heritage Site, and can be witnessed and experienced along this trail. With around 260 000 hectares of beautiful mountains and valleys within its borders, this part of the world – its fauna and flora – is unique. There are indigenous game species roaming around, elusive predators that the privileged few may spot, and a wonderful variety of bird species.

This abundance also means that those tackling the Baviaans Lodge 4x4 Trail will also likely enjoy other outdoor activities in the area. These may include bird watching, hiking, cycling, rock climbing, fishing, river rafting, and star gazing. The ancient San people left artwork on the cliff faces and in the caves, which make for awesome discoveries by visitors.
