Hailing as the winemaker for Rustenberg, Adi Badenhorst decided to branch out on his own to establish AA Badenhorst Family Wines. He has owned a 60 hectare farm with his cousin for years now beside the Paardeberg Mountain in Malmesbury. There are 28 hectares planted to vines. Adi has decided to utilise the old school method of winemaking. Adi sells grapes and uses an old winery last used in 1950ís with concrete tanks and wooden fermenters whereby no destemming or crushing occurs. He believes the various types of granite soils bring freshness to the wines.
Adi wants to produce his wines in the most natural way possible, leaving space for grapes only. The Badenhorst reds sometimes spend six months in the post-fermentation stage. He firmly believes that the barrel stage of the winemaking process yields imperfections which give the wine character.
Their ranges includes AA Badenhorst Family Secateurs White 2009 Swartland, AA Badenhorst Family Secateurs Red 2007 Swartland with a cherry and plum fruit, AA Badenhorst Family White 2007 Swartland- a bright, fresh wine with lemon and herb complexity and AA Badenhorst Family Red 2006 Swartland; a meaty, spicy wine.
