About Wheat Industry Museum
As one of only three such museums in the world, the Wheat Industry Museum in Moorreesburg is a truly special feature of the Western Cape, adding to the charm of the South African experience. This museum is dedicated to the history of wheat farming, the many uses for wheat, and how this industry has grown and shaped the local economy.
Did you know? The Wheat Industry Museum was proclaimed and approved as the first wheat industry museum in South Africa in 1970.
Opened in 1978, this museum is situated in Wheat Country, just about an hour’s drive from the Mother City, as Cape Town is affectionately known. This museum is situated in what was once the Old Dutch Reformed Mission Church, in the heart of the friendly, warm little town of Moorreesburg.
The Wheat Industry Museum showcases the history of the area too, giving visitors unique and fascinating insights into the Western Cape of yesteryear. For this reason, it makes for a popular outing for families with children or for local school groups.
The town of Moorreesburg is known for its small-town hospitality and friendly folk, as well as its stunning vistas of wheat fields and the mountainous horizons of the Western Cape. Being so close to Cape Town and the West Coast, Moorreesburg is the ideal base from which to explore the loveliness of this part of South Africa, including the fishing villages, wine farms and the many tourist attractions of the big city.
