Just north of Pretoria and an hourís drive from the OR Tambo International Airport in the ever-bustling province of Gauteng, South Africa, is the tranquil retreat of the Sandwani Game Reserve. This reserve is secreted in a small, lush valley that is surrounded by scenic hills. This provides the ideal terrain on which to test your 4x4 skills on the local Sandwani Adventure Trail, whether you are a beginner or a more seasoned adventurer.
This route is actually made up of a network of routes (originally quarry excavations) that create three real playgrounds for the 4x4 enthusiast of any level of expertise. It is a grade one to three trail and takes between two and four hours to complete.
Drivers can expect a mixed terrain of muddy patches, clay soils, waterholes and steep climbs and drops. While these tracks get particularly challenging during the rainy season, they are still manageable without the extra help of a guide; so, drivers wanting a self-guided route are well rewarded at Sandwani.
Thanks to its idyllic positioning in the midst of a game reserve, the Sandwani Adventure 4x4 Trail means that drivers also get the chance to see a number of wildlife species during their time here. These include impala, blue wildebeest, gemsbok and warthog.
The natural surroundings are bursting with pretty vegetation and birdlife too. In fact, avid bird-watchers are reminded to bring along a pair of binoculars and their identification kits as there is a variety of avian species that is sure to impress. Game drives can be arranged for those not participating in the 4x4 adventures. Additional activities within the reserve include hiking, walking, fishing and swimming.
