About Olive Schreiner House
The Shreiner House museum is an interesting one situated in Cradock and is former home to Olive Schreiner and her siblings. Olive was a South African political activist with strong beliefs and also author to the well known book 'The Story of an African Farm'.
Becoming a best seller soon after being published in 1883 it also created heavy debates over its interpretation of free thought, transvestitism, feminism as well as relations and pregnancy before marriage.
The Shreiner house is a national monument and houses all of Olive’s books as well as her own personal collection. Here you can learn more about her life and that of her brothers and sister.
Her eldest Brother was a principal at the Goverment School in Cradock at the time while her younger brother became Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. There is a book store on site where you can purchase her works and other stories written about her and her life. This is a fascinating museum and one not to be missed while in or near Cradock.
