About Idwala Hiking Trail
The Idwala Hiking Trail is a fairly easy trail that starts at the rest camp of the beautiful Mountain Zebra National Park close to Middelburg in the Karoo Heartland.
The trail covers 10 kilometres and takes between three and four hours to complete. It is not recommended for children younger than 12 years of age.
The trail takes hikers up to Idwala, which is the Xhosa word for “big rock”. From here, magnificent views lie below, offering hikers a particularly rewarding vista after their hours of hiking. Stunning photographs and lifelong memories are par for the course.
Due to there being very few trees along the trail, the heat can become tiring and hikers are advised to wear sunscreen and protective clothing, and to consume plenty of water along the way.
