Lanseria Airport in the distanceLanseria, West Rand: Lying in outer Randburg, Lanseria is virtually synonymous with the airport that lies out on this side of Johannesburg. What used to be little more than a slick executive airport for corporate travellers with their own jets, now hosts regular flights with Kulula to Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban.

The airport is small, but was built with the intention of being an international airport 30 odd years ago and has more than a few things to promote its use, not least of which is the 25 minute check-in time, which for people on business to Johannesburg, is an added bonus.

And it’s not as if Lanseria is in the middle of nowhere anymore. Development has encroached on this side of the city. Lanseria is just 20 minutes from Sandton, next door to Midrand and Fourways and an easy trip to Pretoria. Outdoor adventures abound in this part of Johannesburg too, and Croc City, the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve and the Lion Park are all based within easy reach of Lanseria

De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre, focuses on conserving the cheetah, many of which roam freely on commercial and communal farm land in South Africa, and, as a result, run into conflict with farmers. They don’t have the protection afforded those cheetah which live in national parks and reserves, and the centre works at resolving issues with farmers for the cheetah. A visit to the centre in the foothills of the Magaliesberg is a wonderful outing, particularly as it is so close to the Hartbeespoort Dam.
