Zonnebloem, City Bowl
Zonnebloem incorporates part of the historical suburb of District Six, which became a well-known area during the Apartheid regime and the times of forced removals.
These were laws that dictated that non-white folk be forcibly (often violently) removed from their homes (many of which were located in the area now known as Zonnebloem) and sent to informal areas outside of the city during the 1970’s. District Six saw 60 000 folk being moved away under tragic circumstances.
Unfortunately, this also meant that many of the homes, mosques, churches and schools of the time were destroyed, robbing the area of Zonnebloem and its surrounds of its distinctive characteristics.
Today, this Cape Town suburb is home to the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and a few police housing units. It is close to the City Bowl with all of its galleries, boutiques, markets, corporate giants, salons, restaurants and entertainment facilities.
Long Street and Kloof Street are also nearby, and full to the brim with exciting things to do and see.
