The Hillcrest suburb of Durban is verdant and scenic, much like the Valley of 1 000 Hills in which it is situated. So, this is an ideal setting for the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s (HACT) Plant Nursery, called Izingadi Zethemba, which means ‘gardens of hope’. This centre for all things green is about more than flora, though. It is part of the AIDS Centre’s non-profit organisation, and plays a crucial role in supporting its community-focussed initiatives.

The HACT Plant Nursery is in the heart of Hillcrest, which makes it a convenient stop. Here, a variety of indigenous and exotic trees, succulents, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, herbs and vegetables are on offer. In addition, garden accessories (such as pots, ornaments and water features) and gardening implements are available, whether for those with dedicated green fingers or for those that simply want to spruce up an outdoor area. These items and plants are reasonably priced and the proceeds raised from their sale go towards assisting local families that have been affected by the scourge of HIV/AIDS.

The insightful and helpful nursery team have a real passion for what they do. In addition to providing help and advice, they have also been responsible for the landscaping of small residential gardens and massive corporate gardens alike.

The HACT Plant Nursery also makes seedlings for fruit and vegetables available to encourage and enable the local communities to have their own thriving gardens from which entire families can survive.
