About The Saunter
The Saunter is more than a stretch of road between the East Coast of KwaZulu-Natal and Hilton. It is an experience, an adventure of many different faces, and one of the best ways to experience this part of South Africa and its diversity.
To celebrate the beauty of this area, nearly 200 participants have been gathered to showcase their arts, crafts, activities, foods and attractions along one route – The Saunter. This route extends from the coast near the metropolitan epicentre of Durban inlands towards Hilton (part of Howick, which is known for its many exquisite waterfalls). What makes it so magnificent is the sheer variety.
The landscapes change from white sandy beaches to rugged mountain ranges, from verdant gorges to the waterfalls that plunge into their depths. And, throughout this beauty, visitors get to meet local artists and crafters with something new and intriguing on offer.
The arts and crafts are, undoubtedly, a major part of The Saunter’s appeal. Along the way, you will come across potters, sculptors, textile designers, carpenters, glass blowers, iron workers, painters and weavers. See the delicate balance of detail and form in their own, completely unique works. In addition, you will have the opportunity to speak to them, learn about their inspiration and what prompted their love for art. Visit their studios to see how they create such gorgeous pieces and add some of these to your own art collection back home.
There are restaurants and coffee shops all along The Saunter. These range from elegant restaurants to bistros, coffee cafés, craft breweries, pizza joints, and more. So, between visiting the many activities and attractions, there will be plenty of opportunities to stop, get refreshed and fuel up for more exploring.
In terms of attractions, The Saunter is abundant. There is an adventure centre that offers kayaking, cliff jumping, white water rafting, zip-lining, wall climbing, and trails for cycling and walking. In addition, there are museums, nature reserves, a coffee farm, picnic sites, and even a working monastery. The two golf courses are always a must for keen golfers and their families.
Children will love getting drumming lessons or learning the age-old tradition of archery. The Winsome Animal Farm invites people of all ages to visit this sanctuary that is home to a variety of animals, most of which are rescues. The residents include sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, rabbits, squirrels, chickens, ducks and pigs. Interacting with the animals and learning more about them is a treat for the whole family.
The overriding vibe of The Saunter is one of total tranquillity. The locals are warm and welcoming and the scenery beautiful. All of this contributes to a retreat that is a real escape from the pace of everyday living; a glimpse into the laid-back approach to life that seems to characterise the countryside.
From Hilton, Durban and the King Shaka International Airport are just over an hour’s drive away. Johannesburg is more than four hours away.
