About McCarthy Rhino Park 4x4 Trail

Just north-east of Johannesburg and 35 kilometres from Pretoria in the Gauteng Province of South Africa is the McCarthy Rhino Park 4x4 Trail. This part of the country is frequented by international tourists, thanks to Gauteng’s being the commercial and social epicentre of South Africa and home to the OR Tambo International Airport.

The McCarthy Rhino Park 4x4 Trail is a circular route that has a number of escape points along the way for those who do not want to venture out onto the total extent of its 12 kilometres. The entire route takes about three hours to complete, and has a formal grading of three. There are some technical areas that require experience or expertise, but the entire route is guided by an experienced, qualified guide, who is trained to assist. The terrain is an exciting combination of water, rocks and massive boulders, rickety log bridges, deep ditches and steep ascents.

This is, in fact, acclaimed as providing one of the most challenging off-road 4x4 trails in South Africa. Still, drivers can choose whether or not to tackle this part of the course. The guide comes in very handy over these technical areas, where he will provide much-appreciated advice. The obstacles are sure to get your adrenalin pumping and heart racing, making for an all-round excellent 4x4 course.

McCarthy Rhino Park provides great training for avid 4x4 enthusiasts that want to get some practice in, within the beautiful surrounds of Dinokeng. Thanks to the tranquillity of these surrounds, the McCarthy Rhino Park is an oasis, a veritable escape from the chaos of city living. The Olifants and Limpopo rivers both contribute to the catchment of the region, which adds to the biodiversity and natural abundance.

Further amenities and facilities at the McCarthy Rhino Park include a restaurant, braai area and ablutions. This trail requires advance bookings (of at least one week) and a minimum of five 4x4 vehicles.
