About Peerboomskloof Pass

Peerboomskloof Pass, where the Karoo meets the Koue Bokkeveld, is also sometimes called Skitterykloof or Katbakkies, particularly by birding fanatics.

The true Katbakkies Pass lies to the west of Peerboomskloof Pass (the two are connected by a rocky plateau), but birders continue to call the picnic area at the foot of Peerboomskloof pass where it narrows 'Katbakkies' because it is such a popular place at which to sight cinnamon-breasted warblers, most often seen on more dry, rocky hillsides such as these.

Did you know? It is interesting to know that years ago this pass, and the incredibly steep Katbakkies Pass, formed part of a sheep trekking route across the mountains.

Fairly desperate bikers have been known to overnight in tents at the picnic area on the pass, as it's fairly sheltered, but no defence against the cold should you find yourself stranded on the pass during winter. After the incredible vastness that is the Tankwa Karoo, the Peerboomskloof Pass, together with the Katbakkies Pass, provides a passage into the Cederberg wilderness area, if you are coming from the north east.

Coming at the pass this way, you pass incredible weathered sandstone formations followed by the appearance of fruit orchards as you descend into the Ceres Valley. The other way round is as beautiful simply because the contrast is so noticeable.

Despite the R355 (the road that takes you over Peerboomskloof Pass) being known amongst the 4X4 community as the 'dreaded tyre-eater dirt road', if you avoid sharp stones the dirt road is not bad. It is steep though, and you may have to think twice about taking an ordinary sedan on the road, particularly if it has been raining.
