About Clanwilliam Dam

The Clanwilliam Dam is nestled in the unrivalled beauty of the Cedarberg region. This part of the Western Cape has an ethereal beauty quite unlike anywhere else. Red soil, rugged mountain ranges, caves that are adorned with the rock art left by ancient tribes, fruit orchards, and a unique combination of plant and animal species all make it quite special.

Did you know? Plans to bolster the water capacity of the Clanwilliam Dam in the Cederberg herald a new dawn in the economic development and growth of the West Coast.

The dam itself is a gravity dam, situated on the Olifants River, near the town of Clanwilliam. It is 43 metres (141 feet) high and has a capacity of almost 122 million cubic metres, but there are plans to increase its height in the near future.

The Clanwilliam Dam is not only impressive in scale and pretty to look at, though. There are chalets on its banks, as well as awesome braai and picnic spots. Enjoy a day with the family while savouring the breath-taking views; a perfect complement to a hearty South African meal.

It is also a hotspot for water sports. Swimming, waterskiing, and stand-up paddling are popular pastimes for regular visitors to the dam. In addition, it is one of the best sites for catching small-mouth bass. Fishermen from all over the country visit the dam to try their hand at catching these fish; all the while enjoying the tranquillity of the Cedarberg. The Clanwilliam yellowfish may also make an appearance.

Clanwilliam is a fantastic base for visitors wanting to explore the mountains, the fishing villages and beaches of the West Coast, or the magnificent display put on by the wild flowers of Namaqualand every year. Cape Town, the Cape Winelands and the Cape Town International Airport are just under three hours’ drive from Clanwilliam Dam.
