The Golden Mile is one of most popular tourist attractions in Durban, and as such, is certainly worth exploring. As its name implies, it boasts a gorgeous stretch of several golden beaches, which are lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. These are flanked by the hustle and bustle of some of Durban’s best accommodation, restaurants, entertainment hubs, shops, and cultural attractions.

The Golden Mile is home to some of Durban’s best beaches. These include South Beach (popular for those learning to surf), North Beach (great for swimming and surfing), Addington Beach (excellent for swimming, surfing and paddling), and the Bay of Plenty (this has the added advantage of being excellent for fishing). The Blue Lagoon is scenic and fabulous for picnics, fishing and just spending time with the people that mean the most to us. The beaches are protected by shark nets and lifeguards.

The warm sands are irresistible for joggers, those wanting a romantic stroll, swimmers, surfers, and sun-bathers that are after the bronzest of tans. Just remember to keep applying a good quality sunscreen to avoid being burnt by the rays.

The Mile, as it is affectionately known, is about more than just world-class beaches, though. There is a paved walkway along the beaches, which is ideal for walking and cycling, and there are traditional Zulu art and craft stalls, where fabulous gifts and keepsakes can be found. There is the Skate Park at the Bay of Plenty Beach, where skateboarders, roller-bladers and riders on BMX bikes show off some serious skills and practice new tricks. The Time Warp Surf Museum is near South Beach along the Golden Mile and is dedicated to the history, culture, and community of surfing.

Another Golden Mile hotspot is the uShaka Marine World. Here, visitors can watch dolphin shows, feed the rays, dive with the sharks in the world’s largest shark tank, meet the seals, and watch penguins play and explore their enclosures. The Wet ‘n Wild World here has loads of slides, rides, and fun for the whole family.

The Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World can also be found along The Mile. This is a hub of entertainment, fun, and excellent food. It also has semi-private beaches and a number of shops. Mini Town, which is a to-scale replica of the city of Durban, is on The Mile too. This is always a hit for little ones that are suddenly transformed into giants, as they explore the little city at their feet.

The Golden Mile is a vibrant, multifaceted stretch of the Durban coastline. It is close to the city centre, with all of its commercial, cultural and retail attractions, and it boasts some of the prettiest and best swimming and surfing beaches in the country.
