A fantastic day out in Kalk Bay is incomplete without a stop at Polana. This Morrocan-inspired restaurant is situated right on the rocks and is popular for sundowners and snacks. Their menu favours seafood dishes … we thoroughly enjoyed the oysters. The couches and tables right in front of the huge sliding windows fill up quickly (and can’t be booked in advance), but the whole restaurant has views of the ocean.
The cocktail menu is small, but if your favourites include a Mojito, Bloody Mary, Strawberry Daquiri or a Champagne Cocktail, then this is a must on the Cape Town Cocktail Route. Service is slow (be warned) but with a view like theirs, it’s difficult to get impatient.
In winter a log fire roars in the lounge, as huge flocks of cormorants trek across the bay. From September, whales are often seen from distances of as little as fifty meters, while seals frolic in the kelp beds all year round. The interior of the restaurant is decorated in an elegant colonial style with African, Indonesian and Portuguese elements.
