About Miller's Point

Miller's Point lies roughly 5 kilometres south of Simon's Town and an hour out of Cape Town, beyond Boulders and Seaforth, on the coastal road that heads to Cape Point. At this stage of the journey there isn't much between the mountain and the sea but the road, and a narrow strip of land overlooking the sea dotted with huge boulders.

Did you know? Cape Townís beaches are amongst the cleanest and most beautiful beaches in the world.

This is the last of the easy-access bays before Cape Point, for after Miller's Point the road climbs substantially higher past Castle Rock to Smitswinkel Bay where a swim involves a steep descent, and subsequent climb.

Miller's Point has two turn-offs. The first is Miller's Point caravan site, and the restaurant, the Blue Marlin (that serves good seafood). Book ahead if you want to eat there as it is firmly on the coach tour route.

The second Miller's Point turn-off takes you to Rumbly Bay, where you'll find a couple of boat launch sites and a tidal pool. If you veer to the right, where the views across the sea are particularly beautiful, you will find a launch site and the Cape Boat and Ski-Boat Club. Turn left instead and the road sweeps around and down to another boat launch (both are also popular diving sites).

The tidal pool is partway between these two launch sites. To reach it involves a walk (it isn't far). The pool is hidden (you need to know it's there, and many people do, so get there early)and beautiful, with a little water slide and incredible views out over the rocky bay. There are also a couple of sheltered natural sea pools where children can paddle, braai areas and picnic spots.

Historically this bay was developed by Edmund Miller in 1825 into a whaling station. His livelihood came to a halt 25 years later when whaling was banned. The coast remained untouched for almost 100 years, unless you count the odd fisherman who used the shoreline to reel in dinner.

The Molteno family then built their holiday home here, later donating it to the city. It is now the restaurant. Miller's Point today is incorporated into Table Mountain National Park, and is a popular whale-watching site as two deep pools just north of Miller's Point attract the southern right whale and their young.
