Ron Belling (1933 - 1998) was a Port Elizabeth architect, aviation and marine painter, and an authority on aviation history, aircraft design, aircraft camouflage and markings. In 1977 he was appointed the first Official Military Artist to the South African Air Force, and in 1989 his 'A Portrait of Military Aviation in South Africa' featuring 150 of his paintings, was published by Struikhof Publishers in Cape Town. His publications include many notes, articles and illustrations on aviation, mainly in Wings over Africa & Aeronews Magazine.
Belling made a study of many large passenger liners which visited South Africa and completed more than 120 outstanding oil paintings of which only a few have been exhibited. He also painted land- and seascapes, and was completing a series on the history of the Junkers Aircraft Company at the time of his death.
His extensive reference library included details notes, sketches and photographs of the aircraft and ships represented in his paintings. As a professional architect this library includes a comprehensive collection of photographs and many drawings and sketches of early buildings in Port Elizabeth, many of which no longer exist.
