The Somerset West Golf Club can be found less than 20 minutes outside of Cape Town’s bustling City Centre and is itself no stranger to the modern pace at which society moves as the course accommodates both a major road and a train line running through it.
Founded in 1908 the course offers both a wealth of history and reputation. Although not formally recognized as an elitist Cape Club, the Somerset West Golf Course has been the training ground of present and future golfing stars, including one of South Africa’s favourite sons, Trevor Immelman, who learnt the game here.
The Parklands style, Par 72 course runs a true and well-tailored 5 942 meters offering the modern player exquisite bent greens to putt on and smooth fairways that run consistent over the three sections of the course. While some might see the road and railway line as an inconvenience, others have seen and enjoyed the extra challenge provided by them.
The rare white squirrels that have made the top nine holes their home are an absolute joy to play the game amongst and topped off with views of the majestic Helderberg slopes and the friendly, welcoming members Somerset West Golf Course is well worth the visit.
