Monument Park Golf Course, Monument
Park, Pretoria, Gauteng: Johan Rissik Drive, Monument Park, Pretoria. Monument
Golf Club members say they have the best greens in Pretoria. The putting surface is indeed
of superior quality.
The 6 473-metre Monument Park Golf course is laid out on the slopes of a hillside south of
the Pretoria city centre. The ground is infertile shale, but through perseverance and
constant attention the course is always in good shape, with well grassed kikuyu fairways
and marvellous greens. Monument is well wooded, the Department of Forestry recently having
planted 4 000 indigenous trees on the course.
The 394-metre 8th and 397-metre 9th are both tough par-fours, the former a sharp dogleg to
the right and the latter curving in a half-moon to the left. It therefore helps to be able
to work the ball through the air. A dam separates the greens at the 9th and 18th, and the
water is very much in play with the respective approach shots.
Monument Park is not overly difficult and wayward hitting is not always given the
punishment it deserves.
