TAMBOERSKLOOF - CITY BOWL

TamboerskloofTamboerskloof, City Bowl:
Tamboerskloof lies between Gardens and the Cape Peninsula National Park, just outside the reaches of Long Street at the foot of Lion’s Head. It is one of the oldest residential suburbs in Cape Town and large, beautiful Victorian-style homes lie side-by-side with art deco in an eclectic mix of architectural styles. Gorgeous views of the bay, Lion’s Head and the mountain make this a popular suburb and an easy one in which to base yourself when in Cape Town.

This lovely suburb, in particular, appears to lie in the arms of Table Mountain. While many of the city bowl’s residential areas recline in enviable positions, up in the foothills of the mountain, Tamboerskloof is at the base of the hill, affected only by the initial incline, although when you’re walking it, it can still feel pretty steep.

Tamboerskloof is perfectly placed to explore the rest of Cape Town and the hum of the city makes its presence felt here. The neighbourhood is quiet however, and tree-lined streets wide and easy to walk. A car is almost unnecessary, as finding your way from Tamboerskloof is easy and, if you remain largely within the city, there is a good transport network.

Kloof Street is a quick walk from Tamboerskloof and known as the city’s ‘restaurant mile’. Browsing the bookshops and antique stores can be as much fun as the sidewalk cafes, which provide hours of entertainment as the ordinary and extraordinary, of every hue and culture, grace the streets. And Long Street is only 10 minutes’ walk from here.
