About Windmill Beach

Situated right on the doorstep of some of the loveliest overnight lodgings in Simon’s Town are the beautiful beaches. Seasoned travellers will likely know of Boulders Beach, which is home to a massive population of African penguins that are as cheeky as they are adorable. But, a quieter, lesser-known neighbour of Boulders is the pretty Windmill Beach.

This beach is secluded by the giant granite boulders for which the area is known, which means that visitors are more likely to find a sheltered spot for a swim, even on days that are otherwise quite windy. The rocks here also create the ideal habitat for loads of marine life. So, pack a snorkel and goggles and dip below the surface of the sea to experience the colours and variety that lie in wait to be discovered. This is safe for children too, making it a great excursion for the whole family during their time in Simon’s Town. What’s more, the penguins are curious and relatively comfortable with people, so they will often swim amongst the rocks and sit in the warm sun on the beach along with their human visitors. The reef is a wonderland for SCUBA divers, particularly newbies, because it is sheltered and calmer.

Pack a picnic basket and enjoy some delicious South African snacks on the warm sand. Dogs are also welcome, which means that Windmill Beach really is for the whole family. It stretches for 200 metres, making it great for a short walk.

However, there are no lifeguards or shark spotters here so, if you’d like to have a swim, be careful and remember to put safety first. There are basic ablutions, a fresh-water showers, and rooms in which to change.

Simon’s Town is a naval town that is utterly charming. It is home to lovely restaurants, plenty of historical sites, and a working harbour. The little town is less than an hour from Cape Town, Table Mountain, and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens.
