Celebrate traditional Portuguese flavours and cooking techniques at the ever-popular Toni’s on Kloof in the City Bowl of Cape Town. This may be a relaxed, comfortable eatery, but Toni certainly does not take a relaxed approach to ensuring that every meal is flavoursome, delicious and loyally Portuguese.

Owner and chef Toni was born to Portuguese parents and grew up in Mozambique, where the Portuguese culture is strong and the appropriate ingredients available aplenty. He continues to take a particularly hands-on approach to every dish to ensure the quality for which his menu and restaurant are so well loved and known by its regulars and by those who visit this destination every year.

For starters, patrons can choose from a massive variety of lip-smacking goodies. Menu items include prawn soup, imported Portuguese sardines, flame-grilled chorizo sausage, chicken giblets, peri-peri and parsley calamari, cod fish cakes (Bolinhos de Balalhau), and a variety of salads.

Beef trinchado, grilled espetada, traditional Portuguese stew, chicken kebabs, Mozambican curries,
chicken breast and prawn curry, prawn rissoles, prawns with the popular chilli and garlic beer sauce, fresh grilled line fish and bacalhau. There are a number of side dishes from which to choose.

The indoor area has been extended to include an outdoor dining patio, from where the warm South African evenings and undeniable Kloof Street vibe can be enjoyed. Two fireplaces ensure that winter evenings are cosy and warm. In addition, Toni’s is known for its friendly, efficient service that so aptly complements the hospitable ambience. It is, perhaps, for this reason that the Toni’s regulars include a diverse selection of people – from corporates that want a hearty meal after a long day at the office to Boho artists and musicians that share a zest for life.
