Hogsback is a tiny area in the mountains of the Eastern Cape, nestled away from the suburban hubbub or the city buzz, approximately three hours’ drive from Port Elizabeth. It is known for its breath-taking vistas of forests, valleys and mountain ranges.

This countryside makes for a number of fantastic opportunities to explore it on bicycle. There are formal trails to follow, but confident cyclists may want to veer off these and carve their own routes through the Eastern Cape.

Some of the most frequented and established trails are:
• The Holy Cyprus Loop – 8km
• Deodar Loop – 14km
• Madonna Loop – 22km
• Tor Doone – 15.1km

These offer very different experiences, and cater to novices and pros alike. Along the way of the various trails, bikers can look forward to experiencing the pure, fresh air of the mountains, with views of the lush vegetation and even some waterfalls.

The Tor Doone Trail is excellent for beginners, and most of the trail is on gravel. There is a tough climb, but the views at its culmination are well worth the sweat. Still, the trail does not require any technical skill, and so is great for energetic riders of all ages.

The Puffadder Run takes riders past two bridges, from which the beautiful waterways can be experienced. The viewing deck next to Robinson Falls and the magnificent valley is an excellent spot to catch your breath and take in the splendour of the unadulterated landscapes.
