We visited the hotel as my husband remembered it being THE place to stay in the 60’s/70’s and was curious to see it. The dirt road leading to the resort is impassable with a saloon car. You need something a little higher off the ground and more robust tyres. 4x4 not necessary…yet. The hotel staff; receptionist, barman, waiters and chambermaid were all pleasant and did try to make us comfortable and happy but they had a difficult task. Our room had a dirty carpet the bathroom must have been the original from the 60’s with a dirty shower curtain along the bath, no mixer thermostat on shower so impossible to get the water temp right, stained mouldy sealant, we even had an old pot filled with soil and a dead worm under our basin! The wood of the windows was cracking and peeling and the door wouldn’t stay shut unless manoeuvred around and locked….. I could go on. On enquiring if there was a better room we could upgrade to, we were told they were all the same. In fact our friends who had the honeymoon suite had a basin blocked and a leaking toilet. On the plus side the food was plentiful and satisfactory and the gardens were well kept and very pretty, but work needed to the pool (swimmable just, but completely opaque and a bit green) and surrounding area. It needs new loungers and cushions…. The paving needs redoing…etc. Our plan was to walk the trails but we were told they were all overgrown and not maintained so we sadly cut our stay short. All in all this hotel needs millions spending on it to bring it back to an acceptable level AND the road needs re-grading urgently. I hope someone takes it on because it is a beautiful area.
