Deep in the ancient formations of the Baviaanskloof Mountain Range lie the Doringkloof 4x4 Trails. This area is characterised by rugged landscapes, enormous mountains that burst from sometimes arid ground, and an abundance of plant and animal life. It remains popular amongst campers and explorers from all over the world; those wanting to be part of the untouched part of the South African countryside.

The Doringkloof 4x4 Trails are self-driven ones, comprising five different options. The longest of these (also known as Rus en Vrede) links the Baviaans to the exquisite Langkloof and measures about 78 kilometres. Three of the other trails are out-and-back routes of five or six kilometres in length, while the fourth is a one-way eight kilometre route called Kortgeut.

They vary in their official grading between two and four. Some of the shorter trails may be done in an hour, while the longest may take up to 12 hours to complete. The different trails have similar terrains; that is a combination of gravel, loose rocks, mountain rock and eroded farm tracks.

The Baviaans is a valley. It and the mountains that surround it are the natural habitat of an impressive variety of species, both plant and animal. Notably, Cape fynbos, which is endemic to South Africa, can be found within this natural treasure chest, promising visitors that they can be part of the unique beauty and abundance of the colourful varieties and fascinating flowers. There is also a unique combination of forest vegetation skirting the forest as well as spekboomveld, mountain plateaus, savannahs, and even cycads.

Nearby camping facilities mean that groups, families or friends can make a real vacation out of your 4x4 experience. The Doringkloof 4x4 Trails are less than 90 kilometres from Willowmore and about three hours’ drive from Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay. Other popular activities that are locally available include hiking, cycling, kayaking, and bird watching.
