About Maria Shires Falls

South Africa’s Mpumalanga Province is spectacular. It is green and lush; punctuated by massive mountain ranges, plunging valleys and geological wonders. Its collection of pretty waterfalls - some mighty and powerful, others smaller and more romantic - are enticing for those that have ventured out on a hike and are looking for a place to have a cool dip, or for those in search of spectacular backdrops for their photographs.

Did you know? In terms of historical attractions, the Voortrekker Fort and Cemetery are located nearby Maria Shires Falls, and make for a fascinating visit.

The Maria Shires Falls is a little waterfall in Sabie named by Joseph Brooke Shires Jr, whose mother’s name was Maria. He played a massive role in the forestry industry of the entire Sabie region in the late 1800’s.

His extended family was also instrumental in the spheres of local mining and timber, which remains a central part of the heritage of this area. When his mother died, he placed her grave near the waterfall. Today, visitors can still visit her grave when they explore the Panorama Route.

The area is rich in natural attractions and wonders. In addition to the Maria Shires Falls, there are also a number of other scenic waterfalls; including the Lisbon, Panorama, Berlin, Forest and Mac Mac falls. Local attractions that always enthral and delight the visitors that love the natural beauty of South Africa comprise Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondawels, Blyde River Canyon, and God’s Window. The Maria Shires Falls is only 15 kilometres from the small historical town of Graskop, a popular tourist spot.

In addition, the Maria Shires Falls are about an hour’s drive from the world-renowned Kruger National Park. Here, the Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, rhino and buffalo) can be seen with some of their wildest cousins (hippo, kudu, eland, and jackal).
