About Forest Falls

Walking through the forests of the Panorama Route, breathing in the crisp, clear air and feeling the warmth of the dappled sunshine on your back is a truly special way to experience Mpumalanga. Forest Falls is an exquisite waterfall that is nestled just 18 kilometres from Sabie, en route to Graskop, right in the heart of this beautiful province.

Did you know? Forest Falls is only accessible on foot, as vehicles are not allowed to drive through the forest.

Park at the picnic spot and head out on the scenic circular route, which is seven kilometres long. The walk takes you through the forests of South Africa’s timber hub, showcasing wonderful varieties of trees and birds.

When you reach the Forest Falls, which is the only waterfall in the area that is wider than it is high, you can have a swim, or simply sit on the banks and enjoy the sheer power and elegance of cascading water. Because the Mac Mac Falls are relatively close, it makes for a fantastic day’s walking to visit both of these gorgeous attractions.

There are toilets at the picnic spot too, for walkers’ convenience. A hiking permit costs R20 and can be obtained from the Forestry Museum in town.

Graskop is a popular little tourist town, with plenty of charm and character. Sabie is a forestry town that smacks of old-world allure, and Pilgrim’s Rest tells the tale of the South Africa mining industry of yesteryear.

Adding a visit to these towns when you see the falls is a must. Local natural wonders include Bourke’s Luck Potholes, God’s Window, Blyde River Canyon, and the intriguing Three Rondawels. The Kruger National Park is one of the top safari spots in the world and is about an hour’s drive from this area.
