4x4 Trails in South Africa

South Africa's landscapes are as varied and wonderful as the people themselves. They lure visitors from all over the world who want to experience the unspoilt beauty and abundance, the wildlife and vegetation, the unspoken magic of Africa.

Did you know? Driving on the beach in South Africa is prohibited to everyone except those who have special permits. Defying this law carries a heavy penalty and confiscation of the offending vehicle.

Part of the appeal of experiencing South Africa’s countryside via its many 4x4 trails is getting to explore the many different types of landscapes. Forests, mountains, valleys, wetlands and sand dunes combine to create a unique topography that defines the beauty and diversity of this land.

Exploring these areas in a 4x4 only adds to the adventure. It should be noted that, particularly in wetlands and on sand dunes, there are specific areas in which 4x4 trailing is permitted and others in which it is not. Those planning on 4x4 trailing here should make enquiries regarding permits ahead of time.

Some trails are designed to test the abilities of the driver, while others are far easier and more fun for those not accustomed to the technicalities of formal 4x4 trails.

There is an enormous amount of scope under the 4x4 umbrella. It is not restricted to simply driving trails and testing one’s skill (or vehicle). This is an increasingly popular sport that allows friends and families to experience a destination in a new and exciting way. It is often paired with camping, game drives or safaris to complete the South African adventure. This allows visitors to combine a number of fabulous South African experiences in a way that is exciting and fun, while showcasing the best of the landscape.

For those venturing on 4x4 trails, it is vital that you are prepared. Plenty of water, sunscreen, protein-rich food and a means of communicating with the outside world are basic necessities. For beginners, the best way to begin is with instruction, and the most enjoyable way to do that is on a guided 4x4 trail.

There are plenty available, with difficulties ranging from pretty easy to only experts need apply. There are literally hundreds of 4x4 trails in every province of South Africa.
