Enjoy the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch, Western Cape

The late Dr. Baxter bequeathed a sum of money to the University of Cape Town (UCT) to build and nurture the arts in and around the city. Opened in 1977 the Baxter Theatre Centre has a main theatre seating an audience of 666 members; a Concert Hall with a fine organ and 683 seats as well as a 162 seater Sanlam Theatre for intimate performances. As both stage venue and producer the Baxter has received national awards for outstanding local performers and home productions. Classical music, opera, comedy, dance and dramatic theatre is presented throughout the year on a daily basis mornings, afternoons and evenings for all ages and tastes. Seasonal festivals run annually.

Adult humour told through colloquial comedians medicates audiences with local laughter. Children's Theatre has little ones lost in on-stage story books and giggling at charismatic entertainers while learning lessons on life. Ikhwezi Outreach program holds workshops encouraging community skills development and culminating in an annual Baxter Ikwhezi Festival of Theatre showcasing previously disadvantaged talent. Teenage life-skills program Sithi @ Baxter uses theatre as an educational medium for adolescents. Baxter workshops on Saturdays teach acting, theatre sports, traditional dance songs and modern dance to kids and teens.
