About Habibia Soofie Masjied

Up on the northern end of Langalibalele Street, in Pietermartizburg, are three Hindu temples and a Soofie mosque. Habibia Soofie Masjied, the mosque, was built by the Sufi saint Soofie Saheb on a piece of land that, when bought in 1909, stood on the very edge of the city stretching from East Street to the banks of the Dorpspruit River.

Its full name is Chishti Nizami Habibia Soofi Aastana and it is the home of the Chishti Habibi Sufi Order, which hails all the way back to Ali ibn Abi Talib, the Prophet Mohammed's cousin and son-in-law.

Did you know? Sufism is the mystical tradition of Islam, often regarded as the 'science of spirituality' and the Chishti order emphasises love and tolerance, with no discrimination on the basis of race or political affiliation.

The Habibia Soofie Khanqah (khanqahs are buildings designed for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood) was built in 1909. It was one of 11 built by Shah Ghulam Muhammad Siddique (Soofie Saheb), who was sent by his master the great Sufi saint Khwaja Habib Ali Shah to bring Islam to the southern tip of Africa.

Soofi Saheb established centres in Natal, the Cape and Lesotho. The Pietermaritzburg Soofie Mosque was administered by his third son. When he died his wife capably continued the spiritual practices, after which her son and grandson took over and serve the community today.

The sandy yellow and red flag is a combination of true love (red) and humility (yellow) and when flown indicates that an ordained spiritual master (Khalifa) is present at the centre.
