About Lion's Head Hike

As one of the best known and most popular hiking trails up Lion’s Head, this is a must for visitors to Cape Town that want to experience the true South African outdoors. This trail takes only one to two hours to complete and is relatively easy, even for those that do not often hike.

It consists of a series of routes, all of which end at the Lion’s Head. From these heights, awe-inspiring views of the Mother City can be savoured. These views include the cultural and historical hub of the Bo-Kaap, the iconic Table Mountain, Signal Hill, Hout Bay, the revamped Cape Town Stadium, and Robben Island in the distance. Your guide will point these out and provide excellent insights into the history, attractions and vibe of this beautiful city.

Lion’s Head has an elevation of 669 metres above sea level, making it a little lower than its neighbouring Table Mountain. It is adorned by the endemic fynbos for which parts of South Africa have become famous; a colourful, scrubby vegetation that is as varied as it is beautiful. Hikers should also look out for the little dassies (hyraxes), as well as the bird species that call this home.

Guided hikes up Lion’s Head are fantastic at sunset, when it is cooler, and the most spectacular views can be enjoyed against the backdrop of the golden setting sun. The hikes at sunrise are also lovely, and the monthly full moon hikes are a must for an experience that is quite magical.

Because Lion’s Head is one of the majestic mountains that look over the City Bowl, it is close and easily accessible to visitors staying in or near the CBD. It is minutes away from the V & A Waterfront, Camps Bay, the Bo-Kaap, and the many restaurants and boutiques stores of Kloof, Strand, Adderley, Bree, and Buitenkant streets.

Hikers should be well prepared with comfortable clothing, appropriate hiking shoes, water and sunscreen.
