The premium bikes produce no noise or harmful emissions (since they don’t use fuel, but are powered by pedals), making them safe for the marine life as well as for the riders. They are also elevated, so riders can look down into the water from an optimal height. They are stable and sturdy, and they’re easy to steer and operate. This makes them ideal for families, couples, corporate teams, and school groups that are up for an adventure of a different sort. Because riders need to peddle the water bikes, they need to be at least about five feet tall to reach them.

While you are peddling across the salty blue, look out for dolphins, seals, and the playful antics of the local penguin colony. Between June and December, you may even spot some whales rising out of the water to peep at their human visitors.

Along the way, you will go on one of two routes. Either you’ll head towards Boulders Beach, where the penguins live and amuse spectators, or you will head along the shoreline past the Clan Stuart Shipwreck, and then eventually turn back to the naval base.

Guided tours are available, as are walk-in rentals. Cape Town Water Bikes operates from Simon’s Town, which is only about 45 minutes from the CBD of Cape Town, and about an hour from the international airport.
