About 'Meet' Danie Theron

Danie Theron (1872 - 1900) was a hero of the Anglo-Boer War. A scouting chief, he was named by Lord Charles of the opposing British side as 'the hardest thorn in the flesh of British advance'. He now takes a patriotic stance in the form of a 3 ton aluminium and clay statue on site at the Voortrekker Museum and Nature Reserve.

Sculpted by Charl Engela in 1969 and subsequently restored by Alusaf Bayview his statue was unveiled at Fort Schanskop in 2001 by his direct descendants. On sculpted bended knee with rifle in hand, Danie Theron now faces the direction of his death, Gatstrand, from the hilltop.

Nelson Mandela paid tribute to this South African figurehead on site in 2002, pay your tribute at your leisure - his impressive size makes for an impressive photo companion.
