Once you’ve visited this area, you’ll know why booking your Hogsback accommodation is something really special. This little village in the mountains oozes romance and has a distinctively ethereal allure to it. It is characterised by dense forest, towering mountains, plummeting valleys, waterfalls and a village that is full of character.

It’s practically impossible to visit Hogsback without exploring its exquisite countryside. There are a number of hiking and walking trails, of course. But, to add a little adrenalin into the mix, the 4 x 4 trails are a must.

Hogsback 4 x 4 Adventures boasts a fun off-road trail that can be tackled with a 2 x 4 that has high clearance, if necessary. This track winds behind the Hogsback Mountains towards Keiskammahoek along an old ox wagon track. The route descends (with some steep sections that are flanked by a few overgrown trees) into the valley, along the scenic banks of the river, and through indigenous forest. This is what 4 x 4 dreams are made of.

The trail has a total length of 55 kilometres, of which 14 are off-road. It usually takes about three hours to complete. Its ratings are:

Up: 3
Down: 2
Wet: 3 to 4

For more of a challenge, visitors can start at the end and do the trail in reverse. Heading uphill, you will definitely need to engage the four-wheel drive to have the maximum amount of fun and adventure. Expect a few scratches on your body paint, but most of them are easy enough to polish out.

Along the way, there are gorgeous picnic spots and picture-perfect points to stop for a flask of hot coffee. The route is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace and not in a hurry. Wave at the friendly locals as you pass them for some of the biggest smiles you’ll enjoy all day.

Hogsback is just over three hours from Port Elizabeth and two hours from the Addo Elephant National Park.
