About Johannesburg Art Gallery

Works by Rodin, Dante, Gabriel Rossetti, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas and Henry Moore grace the walls of the Johannesburg Art Gallery on the corner of Klein and King George Streets on Joubert Park, right in the midst of the central business district of Johannesburg.

Did you know? The Johannesbburg Art Gallery (JAG) is housed in a beautiful building designed by Edward Lutyens, the British architect who was also responsible for the Anglo-Boer War Memorial.

Whilst Joubert Park might be a little dodgy, the gallery is housed in a beautiful building designed by Edward Lutyens, who was very much involved in the design and building of New Delhi. The art gallery is a treasure trove in the midst of a buzzing, throbbing third world city - the largest gallery on the sub-continent with a collection larger than that of the SA National Art Gallery in Cape Town.

The collection is extensive enough that at any time the gallery exhibits but 10% of its works, whilst the rest remain in storage. With generous sponsorship from Anglo American and the City of Johannesburg, plus a rather large trust fund, the gallery continually adds to its collection, which includes a number of artefacts.

The Johannesburg Art Gallery not only houses an incredible collection of 17th century Dutch paintings and the works of pre-eminent artists like Picasso and Monet, but it also has antiques, sculptures, drawings, prints and laceworks, and a comprehensive South African collection that includes the works of Gerard Sekoto, Alexis Preller, Maud Sumner, Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae.

The Johannesburg Art gallery also hosts regular temporary thematic or artefact displays.
