Walmer Downs, Port Elizabeth
Walmer Downs is a quiet residential suburb that is tucked away between the William Moffett Expressway and the Baakens Valley in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. It has wide roads, flanked by large sidewalks and tall trees that were planted generations ago. These lend the entire suburb a leafy, peaceful look and feel.
There are many homes, both old and new, as well as some fantastic townhouse complexes, a retirement home, and Aurora, a renowned medical and care facility.
Walmer Downs is situated very close to the beautiful Baakens Valley, which is an awesome spot for picnics, hiking, cycling and exploring for young and old alike. Here is a variety of birdlife in the Baakens, including the gorgeous Peacocks, whose characteristic calls echo throughout the valley.
Walmer Downs is situated conveniently between Greenacres and Walmer Park shopping centres, which are Port Elizabeth's two main malls. The Figtree Centre is also a few minutes' drive away and offers a range of restaurants (including Ocean Basket and Spur), shops and major chains (like Food Lover's Market). Nearby residential neighbourhoods include Lorraine, Newton Park and Walmer.
The airport is only 15 minutes away, while the stunning beaches that attract throngs of tourists to Nelson Mandela Bay every year are about 20 minutes' drive away.
