ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIESOslo Beach is situated in the heart of the popular Hibiscus Coast - between Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach, an hours drive from Durban International Airport. Put on the map by the Norwegian Settlers who landed at the Umzimkhulu River Mouth in 1882 to begin farming on their 100 acre allotments. This is South Africa's most favoured beach destination as the east coast is washed by the warm Indian Ocean and has beautiful weather even in the middle of winter. This is the time of the unique Sardine Run when the bird and sea-life are put into a frenzy by the huge shoals washed into the shallows. Not to mention the human behaviour when a shoal beaches. Oribi Gorge is a spectacular nature reserve, home to the endangered Oribi buck wonderful for hiking or picnics. For the more adventurous there is also the world's highest abseil alongside a waterfall, gorge swing and white-water rafting. The deep Umzimkhulu River Gorge can be viewed, in spectacular fashion, from the famous Leopard Rock. Nearby is the Lake Eland Game Reserve for horse riding, mountain biking or guided game drives. The Red Desert at Port Edward is the smallest desert in the world with an micro-ecology in stark contrast to the lush subtropical surrounds. Bird watchers hot-spots are Mpenjati, Umdoni and Umtamvuna Nature Reserves. Golf courses of note abound up and down the coastline - four being in the top 50 in South Africa. Others include the Southern Explorer (a traveller's meander), Protea banks and Aliwal Shoal for scuba diving. ACCREDITATIONS
