What was first the chicken coop or the theatre? In this case the historic chicken coop built in 1780 came first later hatching into the cosy theatre, Die Hoenderhoek (The Chicken Coop).

This henhouse is canopied by old oak trees that brush against the theatre roof. Staged on a wine farm the vineyards form part of the ensemble cast who perform in this eighty seater venue. Wooden ceiling beams add warmth to charm, walls are detailed with original chicken nests and candles burn as soft stage lighting on an intimate platform that brings beloved local performers within touching distance of the audience. The small stage, often set with piano or guitars, hosts mostly one and two person performances including musicians, poetry readings and cabaret shows. The personal setting exposes each subtle facial expression of characters brought to life by performers and carries each musical note in clarity in the atmospheric auditorium.

Farm style soup, home-baked breads, jams as well as home-made pâté are served as light meals before the show and coffee is served after the show, all included in the ticket price. A cash bar provides wine and refreshments and pre-recorded clucking sounds cue the time to take up your theatre seats.
