South Africa is a melting pot of cultures burning on a flame of new found democracy. Take a few steps on a culinary journey that fed the long walkers to freedom. Tie your shoelaces as you embark on two hour walking tour of the township of Kayamandi that falls on the perimeter of Stellenbosch in the Cape winelands region.
A result of historic political policies, this informal settlement was established in the early 1940's as a housing by-product of the previous Apartheid government's segregated living laws. Traditional pots of food cooked by African women warmed on wooded fires keeping African children nourished and African men strong. Cost effective cuisine made with love provides a hearty meal that steams with slow seeping flavours undiscovered by today's fast 'Happy Meal' generation. This family focussed community continues in the preparation of authentic meals undocumented by recipe books and undemonstrated on cooking shows. Here traditional tribal tastes challenges the a la cart plating of Europe in the neighbouring viticultural suburb.
The experience begins with the gathering of supplies from vernacular 'Spaza' shops (the colloquial grocers of the district) - basic ingredients blend into complex taste profiles of African comfort food ... An interactive peeling and preparing session follows in the community centre kitchen led by a professional Black African cook who shares Black African food traditions and Black African cultural insights. All hands contribute to the affair which is enjoyed together at a table laid with an African print tablecloth and set for African appetites.
