Chapman's Peak Drive is listed in the locations 'black book' of every photographer, film maker and dreamer worldwide. It is no doubt on the wish-list to tread of every shoe and wheel and hence is included in the route of the Two Oceans Marathon and Cape Argus Cycle Tour.
Conceptualised by Sir Frederic De Waal, it was constructed during the First World War as a remarkable roadworks achievement. Blasted rock work opened up this 9km stretch of coastal road carving out the ultimate marine drive on a base of granite rock. This coastal carriage way links the charming fishing village of Hout Bay to the rural beach strip of Noordhoek unfolding magnificent views on each of its 114 curves above seaside cliff faces. The panorama exhibits 180º of mountain skyline, rocky coastline, horizon, ocean and bays.
Open road and half tunnels are an engineering achievement along with the rock fall protection measures including catch fences and slope stabilisation. Due to the nature of the landscape this toll road is not always open in full but access on foot to the viewing points allow dramatic Cape scenery above a steep mountain drop that cuts sharply into a deep Atlantic Sea. Indulge in the breathtaking picnic spots and camera shots.
