Smell the Roses at the Durbanville Rose Garden

Rose scenery flourishes aground as romantic scents float aloft. The flower of love has a 3.5 hectare dedication in Durbanville where 500 rose varietals on 4500 bushes reveal beauty saturated blooms separated in sections of shapes and sizes.

The commotion of colour contrasts the peaceful feel of the Durbanville Rose Garden set in the wine region. The Western Cape Rose Society established the garden in 1979 with most roses being donated by rose enthusiasts. The rose enclosed Schabort family burial grounds form part of the garden growing on family donated land which is part of the Old Eversdal Estate. The clay soil on the east facing slope provides thriving terrain for the blossoms. Awash with splendour this spectacular garden portrays beds of antique roses, miniature roses, award-winners, country climbers, shrubs, hybrid teas and floribundas. A stroll around the fountain, under the gazebo and past the rockery is a soothing experience with a Sunday afternoon tea being served in the clubhouse October through May.

This world class rose garden is one of only three trial rose gardens in the Southern Hemisphere serving as a global rose nursery. Four full time council gardeners tend the roses welcoming the volunteering nurture of the Friends of the Rose Garden non-profit organisation. Public picking is not permitted but pruning demonstrations are sometimes given.
