Cape Point Ostrich Farm

Close to where the two Ocean's meet is a bird farm with the world's largest flightless birds who despite their 2m wingspan are aided by their two claws to be the fastest two legged running creatures on earth, the Ostrich. The Cape Point Ostrich Farm is the breeding ground of 40 Ostrich pairs kept in 40 camps on a 65 Ha Cape Dutch style family farm.

The farm's Ostrich skeleton is an example of the support system of these birds that stand 1.7 - 2.7m (5.5 - 9ft) tall, weigh 90 - 130kgs (200 - 300lbs) and live 30 - 70 years. Tours are facilitated on the farm in English, German and French while the scientific name of the bird is derived from Greek meaning 'camel sparrow'. In sync with their camel-like appearance is the Ostrich's ability to go for several days without water, of course the same is not expected of visitors who can enjoy refreshments, tea, coffee and Ostrich delicacies at the Tea Garden.

Soft fluffy feathers making the Ostrich famous for dusters gently shade their chicks from the African sun. These chicks can be seen on the farm hatching from their glossy eggshells during the breeding season. The world's largest bird lays the world's largest egg, a single Ostrich egg weighing the same as 24 chicken eggs and measuring 15cm x 13cm (6 x 5 inches).

These eggs can be purchased from the shop in a variety of forms, hand painted, and decoupage and carved. Ostrich leather is claimed to be the strongest leather available commercially, used in fashion products and accessories (belts, shoes, jackets, filofaxes, wallets and bags) sold on-site at the farm leather shop.
