Ride the Hexpas Express

A local ‘secret’ in a sense, as it isn’t advertised much, is the Hexpas express, a unique railway trip between De Doorns and Matroosberg that travels right over the Hex River Pass and overlooks the gorgeous valley - if you’re doing this in autumn you’ll be hard pressed to find more beautiful views anywhere.

The railroad, originally built during the 1870s, was abandoned until its resurrection for tourism. The two coaches are drawn by a vintage Fordson 35 horse power tractor and one travels at a maximum speed of 20 kilometres an hour, all of which combines in an unforgettable experience.
